Virtual surround works by applying a head-related transfer function: a filter set that mimics how your outer ear colours sound arriving from different directions. The software takes a multi-channel game mix, applies direction-specific filtering, and folds it down to two channels. Your brain, which decodes direction from exactly those cues in real life, interprets the result as positional.
Two practical consequences follow. First, the filtering is generic, modelled on an average ear that is not yours, so accuracy varies between people. In my blind testing, virtual surround improved front-back discrimination for some listeners and made it worse for others, with left-right accuracy essentially unchanged either way. Clamp force, pad material, and the glasses problem
The most useful number on my bench is clamp force, and almost nobody publishes it. Here is how the readings map to experience, based on the eight sets and roughly forty others I have measured.
Below 4 N: comfortable indefinitely, prone to sliding during head movement. Between 4 and 5 N: the target zone, secure without pressure build-up. Between 5 and 6 N: fine for two hours, tiring beyond that for most people. Above 6 N: monitoring-grade grip, headache territory for long play unless you stretch the headband.
Stretching works. Leave the headset over a box roughly 20 mm wider than your head for a week and the headband takes a set. The A71 dropped from 6.2 N to about 5.5 N with that treatment, and it never sprang back fully.
Glasses complicate all of it. A temple arm passing under the pad breaks the seal, and my measurements showed sub-100 Hz output falling by 8 to 12 dB when that happened. Thick-framed glasses made it worse; thin wire frames barely registered. Softer, deeper pads absorb the arm and reseal around it, which is why the JBL and the Logitech coped best despite very different clamp figures. Picking by use case
Longest sessions, mixed devices: the JBL Quantum 100. Lightest, loosest clamp, detachable mic, works on everything with a headphone jack.

Five mistakes I see repeatedly
Buying by driver diameter. A 50 mm driver is not automatically better than a 40 mm one. Enclosure design, damping, and seal quality matter far more, and the best-measuring set here was not the one with the largest drivers.
Treating “noise cancelling mic” as noise cancelling headphones. On budget listings that phrase almost always describes the microphone’s directional pattern, not any active cancellation in the earcups. The isolation you get is passive, from the seal.
